- Strengthening Merial's pest control portfolio for pets, preparations for a global launch - Paris, France - February 18, 2014 - Sanofi (EURONEXT: SAN and NYSE: SNY) and its Merial Animal Health division today announced that the European Commission has approved NexGard® (afoxolaner) for the treatment of flea and tick infestation in dogs. the oral treatment removes fleas for at least 5 weeks and ticks for at least one month. NexGard is also indicated for the treatment of dermatitis due to flea allergy1.

NexGard's new active ingredient, afoxolaner, is a molecule derived from isoxazoline, with an entirely new mechanism of action. It acts as an "ectoparasiticide", which means it destroys parasites, such as fleas and ticks, that live on the skin or in the fur of animals. NexGard quickly eliminates fleas before they can lay and provides long-lasting protection against ticks.
Fleas and ticks can cause major health problems for pets. A preventive program against fleas and ticks is an essential part of their care. NexGard is the first and only beef-flavored chewable tablet indicated for the treatment of flea and tick infestations in adult dogs and puppies starting at eight weeks or two kilograms.
